Also a Paddle Canada certification maintenance clinic for Paddle Canada Instructors.
Meet other paddlers, expand your paddling skills, and experience the best paddling on the west coast.
A special SUP event in Tofino. A weekend of paddleboard surfing and touring clinics, a beach BBQ, and prizes!
Open to Paddle Canada instructors and other stand up paddleboard enthusiasts (participants should have Paddle Canada Advanced Flatwater SUP Skills accreditation or equivalent experience and knowledge. Contact Swell Tofino or South Island SUP to take an Advanced SUP Skills course before the symposium if needed.
$89/person online registration includes 2 days of paddling clinics and evening events. Spaces are limited so please pre-register online.
Location: Mackenzie Beach Campground in Tofino BC. Camp on the beach! The symposium this year will take place at the Swell Tofino shop and camping at the lower campgroung right on the beach. When booking you will have the option to add a beach campsite (not drive in, but the campsites come with a parking spot).
Capacity: Spaces are limited to 35 participants in order to maintain the best instructor to participant ratios.
Not included: Accommodation (you can add-on a campsite at Mackenzie Beach Resort $60/night+tax at check-out), you are also responsible for your own transportation and food.
Extra: Need gear? SUPs, wetsuits, and PFD's are available to rent. Choose the gear you need on the check out.
Organize your own accommodation: We can recommend camping at Mackenzie Beach Resort/Campground where the event will be held. Special this year, we've pre-reserved all the beach front camping. You will have the option to book a beachfront campsite on check out. Each campsite is limited to one tent: 2 adults or one family group per campsite.
Activities: All skill clinics will cater to a variety of levels of experience, with multiple instructors.
FRI – (arrival and opening!)
3pm to 6pm - check in to your accommodation in Tofino. Participants must organize their own accommodation. We have reserved the beach campsites at Mackenzie Beach Resort. These are walk in tent sites that come with a parking spot (50 meters away).
5pm to 7pm - REGISTRATION at the Swell Tofino shop at MACKENZIE BEACH CAMPGROUND, we're located in the lower campground. This will be the home base for the event, with beachfront campsites available to book on checkout of the online registration. We will sign waivers and confirm the plan and meeting location for the next day's clinics.
**All participants will need to sign liability waivers. The Swell waiver can be seen here and signed electronically at checkout. The Paddle Canada waiver can be seen here (you don't have to print these we will have copies for you to sign).
SAT – (morning surfing, afternoon touring)
8:00 am – 9:00 am Introductions + Paddle Canada info session for Instructors: program changes, best practices, new teaching techniques, administration and a review of the standards for each skill level. MANDATORY FOR INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE CREDIT. Location: South Chesterman parking lot (also our meeting spot before surfing)
9:00am – 12:30pm SUP Surfing (SUP surfing level 1 or 2) meeting at South Chesterman Parking lot.
12:30pm – 1:30pm Lunch Break
2:00pm – 5:30pm Special SUP Touring: Practical Navigation techniques. Open ocean touring. Launch and return from Swell Tofino's shop at Mackenzie Beach Resort.
6:00pm Dinner Mingle: Bring your own food. Based on Covid restrictions we may bring back the BBQ. Regardless we'll have an outdoor propane fire on the beach in front of our campsites.
SUN – (Beach day! Surfing + some touring if you'd like)
10:00 am – 2:00 pm A day to enjoy the beach. We'll spend the day at south chesterman mostly surfing, there will be the option to also go for a tour from the beach.
Please make sure you have the skills to get the most out of this event. The clinics are not geared toward first time paddlers. All participants must have Paddle Canada Advanced Flat water paddling Skills or equivalent experience.
Being able to paddle forward efficiently in choppy or windy condition and maneuver your board effectively are important skills to have to get the most out of the surfing and touring on the west coast!
