Tofino Surf Lesson - Learn to surf with Swell Tofino

Swell Tofino's surf lesson: We make learning to surf easy with great gear, experienced and enthusiastic instructors, a new approach to surfing instruction. Our group sizes are kept at 5 students to 1 instructor. We’ll show you all the basics and give you the tools to continue on your own.

3 hour surfing lesson - roughly 1 to 1.5 hours in the water

How It Works:

Meet us at our storefront location to check-in, sign some paperwork, and get into our wetsuits. We'll then drive separately to the surfing beach (5-10 minutes). The instructors will bring the surfboards to the beach, you will need to provide your own transportation to the beach.

The lesson begins when we arrive at the beach, we start off with an introduction to the surf environment, practise paddling, popping up, controlling our gear in the surf zone, and cover easy to remember safety points. After this beach talk we get in the water as a group. The instructor keeps an eye on the whole group and provides individual feedback to each student.

We take breaks as needed through the lesson. At the end of the lesson we wrap things up, saying our goodbyes in the parking lot after taking our wetsuits off and handing gear back to the surf instructors.

Age And Ability:

Group lessons are ages 13 and up and participants should be able to swim. For non-swimmers and those under 13 years of age, we require that you book a private lesson so that we can give you the 1 to 1 attention you need in the water!  

No previous surfing experience is necessary! Beginner lessons are conducted in waist to chest deep water.

Lesson Times:

High season (March 15 to October 15) - two lesson times per day - 10:00am or 1:30pm check-in.

Winter season (October 16 to March 14) - one lesson time per day - 12:30pm check-in.

The surf lesson experience is 3 hours including check in, gearing up, introductions, beach safety talk and time in the water surfing. This translates to roughly 1 to 1.5 hours in the water surfing. 

Gear rental after your lesson:

Come back and rent from any of our locations, if you've taken a lesson with us, you get 10% off any rental for the rest of your trip.

Cancellation Policy
Swell has a 48 hour cancellation policy for day tours and lessons. A full refund minus a $10 administration fee will be issued for trips cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances if guests provide notice more than 48 hours before departure time.

There will be NO refund for cancellations made by guests with less than 48 hours notice.If we need to cancel a tour/lesson/course due to weather conditions we will issue a full refund.
