Rip Curl Nationals is a surfing competition, part of the CANAM Open series, where women and men compete over a 3 day period in official ISA (International Surfing Association) age categories and disciplines.
April 19-21, 2024 at Cox Bay, Tofino BC
Each event is split into 4 person heats, the top two people from each heat progresses until the final heat where an overall winner is chosen.
Competitors get their heat scores from the top 2 waves they ride in that heat. Each wave is scored by the judges in three main aspects: speed, power and flow. Performing turns and maneuvers that flow nicely together, on bigger waves, and in critical wave sections will lead to a higher wave score.

You might just get so inspired that instead of watching you want to go surfing yourself. We completely understand!
Here’s what you need to know: the competition will be held at the South side of Cox Bay beach, the Maltby Rd parking lot. You can still surf at Cox Bay, but keep to the North side of the beach to avoid disrupting the comp. If you want to dodge that area all together, I suggest checking out Chesterman Beach or Long Beach.
Even though a few members of our team will be out there competing, the Swell Tofino shop remains open regular hours (9am-6pm). Come visit us in the store or book rentals and lessons through our website.
