If you’re thinking about learning to surf, Tofino is one of the best places to start. With beginner-friendly beaches, year-round waves, experienced instructors, and a welcoming surf community, it’s easy to see why so many people catch their first wave here.
There’s something special about learning to surf in Tofino, and it’s more than just the waves. It’s the atmosphere and the strong surf community that surrounds it. Early in the morning, you can see locals pulling on wetsuits in beach parking lots, checking the conditions with a coffee in hand, and catching up with friends before paddling out. Surfboards are strapped to vehicles year-round, and you can hear conversations about tides, swell forecasts, and wave conditions everywhere in town.
Surfing in Tofino feels more like becoming a part of the surf community, not just a tourist activity.
But why is Tofino great for beginners to learn how to surf?
One of the main reasons Tofino is such a great place to start your surfing journey is the variety of beginner-friendly beach breaks. Unlike reef or rock bottoms found in many surf destinations, Tofino has mostly sandy beaches that provide a forgiving environment for learning.
For beginners, it’s best if you learn to surf at North Chesterman, Cox Bay, and/or Long Beach. Avoid Florencia Bay and Rosie Bay.
Tofino has year-round surfing opportunities. Waves are typically smaller and gentler in the summer, ideal for beginners learning to stand up for the first time. During the fall and winter months, larger swells arrive from across the Pacific, bringing exciting conditions for more experienced surfers.
But even on those bigger days, Tofino still offers protected areas for beginners to learn. In that case, it’s best to join a surf lesson or at least call a surf shop to ask about the best conditions for your skill level.
Tofino has beaches facing different directions, which react differently to tides, wind, and swell direction. Surfing conditions can change throughout the day as tides, wind, and swell shift. If one beach is too large or windy for beginners, it might be perfect just around the corner. This allows surf schools to find the best possible conditions on any given day.
🏄♂️ Even on the smallest days, the waves are surfable at Cox Bay and Long Beach. But if Cox looks like a lake, there’s probably no surfing waves in Tofino that day.
🏄♂️ If the swell is bigger than 6ft, go to North Chesterman.
🏄♂️ On the really big swell days, we surf at Tinwis (formerly Mackenzie Beach)
🏄♂️ Most beaches prefer the incoming tide.
🏄♂️ If the wind is NW (north-west), go to South Chesterman or Long Beach. If the wind is S (south), go to Cox Bay, Maltby entrance. SW (south-west) is onshore everywhere.
Tofino has built a strong reputation as Canada’s surf town, with surf schools helping people learn to surf for decades.
If you’ve never surfed before, taking a surf lesson can dramatically shorten your learning curve. Instructors help students understand ocean safety, wave selection, paddling and pop-up techniques, and proper surf etiquette while building confidence in the water.
Surfing is not an easy activity to begin. So why not make it easier on yourself by joining a surf lesson? Check your options here.

What truly makes Tofino special is the surf lifestyle.
Whether it’s chatting with other surfers in the parking lot, watching the sunset from the beach after a session, or swapping stories around a fire, it’s easy to feel connected to the local surf culture. Many visitors come for a surf lesson and end up returning year after year because of the community they find here. Even our instructors keep coming back every season to enjoy the surf and help other people catch their first wave. 🌊
