Luckily for us, Tofino has a variety of beginner-friendly beaches where beginners can learn without worrying about rocky bottoms, reefs, dangerous breaks, or sharks. We have none of that here! 🙌
So, where do we take you on the lesson? Depending on the day’s conditions, we choose between these beaches:
- North Chesterman Beach

- Mackenzie Beach (occasionally)

What Will You Learn in a Surf Lesson
Every surf lesson follows a step-by-step outline to help you feel confident and safe before hitting the water. Here’s what a typical session looks like:
1. Beach Warm-Up & Safety Talk
Before grabbing your board, you’ll start with a warm-up on the sand and a safety briefing. We’ll cover:
- Ocean hazards (like rip currents and shore breaks).
- Surf etiquette and how to share the waves respectfully.
- How to protect yourself — and others — while in the water.
2. Getting to Know Your Surfboard
You’ll learn the parts of the board and how to carry it, as well as how to position yourself correctly. This might sound basic, but good board handling sets the foundation for everything else.
3. Practicing the Pop-Up and Paddling
On the sand, we’ll go through the motion of the pop-up — the move that takes you from lying down to standing on your board. Practicing on land helps your body remember the motion before you try it in the waves.
4. Catching Whitewash
For most beginners, the first rides happen in the whitewash — the foamy, broken waves closer to shore. You’ll learn how to catch these waves, ride them to the beach, and stay balanced along the way.
